NORWOOD – When a Massachusetts boy was forced by the health department to shut down his sidewalk ice cream stand, he made the best of the situation and started raising money for his local hockey team.
Dan Doherty, 12, of Norwood, told his family he was bored this summer and wanted a job.
Ice cream stand closed
He and his mother, Nancy Dougherty, came up with the idea to make and sell ice cream, with half the proceeds going to Dan's brother's hockey team, the Boston Bear Cubs.
The family hosted an ice cream party for about 20 friends and neighbors last weekend, after which they received a letter from the Norwood Health Department saying someone had called the police.
“We raised $62 the first time, so it was good to help them out,” Dan Dougherty said. “There are so many lemonade stands out there, I don't understand why they wouldn't close.”

On Saturday, the Doughertys scooped leftover ice cream onto ice cream treats and gave them away for free, thanking the Boston Bear Cubs for the donations that continued to come in while they were giving out the ice cream.
The Bear Cubs provide an opportunity for people of all abilities to play hockey. Members of the team have physical and developmental disabilities, and they play at an adapted level to allow them to participate safely.
Dan's mother spoke about the importance of the team.
“This hockey team has been a vital part of his brothers' happiness over the last 10 years,” Nancy Dougherty said.
