Milan authorities are introducing “red zones” where people with previous convictions for drug trafficking, theft, rape and assault will not be allowed to enter. The rules have been in place for three months and will apply in crowded places such as the cathedral square, railway stations and entertainment areas.
On New Year's Eve, Piazza Duomo, the districts of Darsena and Navigli and the area of the three railway stations will be “red zones” for three months. According to the regulations, in all these places, the police can order the immediate removal of people who pose a threat to public safety.
This was decided at the meeting of the order and safety committee of the Italian metropolis, which was held before the celebration of the new year.
A ban on smoking in public places was also introduced
Three years ago, on New Year's Eve, a mass persecution of women took place in the square in front of the Milan Cathedral. At the meeting on Friday, it was decided that on the night of December 31 to January 1, a special point of emergency intervention and medical assistance will operate in this square.
Previously, the authorities of Milan decided that the ban on smoking in open public places, including on the street, will come into effect from January. The exception will be isolated places where a distance of 10 meters from other people can be maintained.
