Japan Airlines has restored its IT system, including ticketing, after Thursday's failure caused by a hacker attack, Kyodo news agency reported. Due to the cyber attack, more than 20 domestic and international flights were delayed.
On Thursday morning local time (night from Wednesday to Thursday in Poland), the national airline of Japan noted a problem with the passenger baggage check-in system. In response, JAL temporarily disabled the offending router and suspended ticket sales.
The carrier said the attack caused delays to at least 24 domestic connections and “changes to international flights”. However, there have been no reports of leaks of passenger information or serious damage or loss.
Shortages at airports during the holiday season
Another major Japanese carrier, All Nippon Airlines (ANA), said it had not seen any signs of an attack on its systems.
On Tuesday, American Airlines grounded its flights for an hour after discovering an unspecified “technical problem.”
Air transport experts note that the failures occurred during the intense traffic related to Christmas and New Year. Many flights are sold out, so a flight cancellation has a cascading effect that takes days to recover.
