Three days later, Akita Prefecture captured a bear hiding in a supermarket. Previously, the animal attacked one of the store's employees, seriously injuring him. Akita authorities decided to take drastic measures.
A bear entered a supermarket in Akita Prefecture on Saturday morning. The animal attacked a man who was working at the store. The 47-year-old man suffered minor injuries to his chest and face.

The injured man was rescued by his colleagues, taken to a safe location and called the police. Ambulances and specialized services were also on the scene, capturing and euthanizing the bear.
Upon arrival, it was determined that the animal had eaten in the meat department and then hid in an unknown location. Despite searching for the bear and multiple attempts to lure it out, the bear was never found.

A trap was set at the entrance of the supermarket and a drone was used to search for the bear. The animal was captured only on Monday afternoon. Police found him in a trap containing apples, honey and bread.
The 47-year-old man remains in hospital and was the only person injured in the incident. At the time of the attack, the store was still open and only 20 employees were inside.
The bear was euthanized and killed shortly after being captured.
Japan. Bear attacks are on the rise
Attacks by bears are increasing in Japan as well. Kyodo News reported that between March 2023 and March 2024, 219 people were injured and six people went missing due to bear attacks. Authorities in many prefectures issued warnings and advised residents not to walk alone in forests or remote areas.

Japan's bear population continues to grow. The number of black bears is 44,000, compared to 15,000 in 2012. On the other hand, there are 12,000 brown bears.
