Malaysia has officially adopted WorldCoin's iris scanning technology as part of its digital transformation strategy, a significant step aimed at improving the security and efficiency of digital identity verification across the country.
The deployment is the result of a partnership between the WorldCoin Foundation, Tools for Humanity (TFH), MyEG and Malaysia's government research and development agency, MIMOS Berhad, to align WorldCoin's highly secure biometric authentication option, called “Proof of Work”, with Malaysia's existing digital ecosystem.
Under the collaboration, the partners will jointly manufacture “Orb”, a biometric device for iris scanning, and implement Worldcoin's blockchain system into Malaysia's national blockchain framework. This process will not only improve client identification but also transparency, as well as new strategies enabled by Worldcoin's open-source platform.
Malaysia Adopts WorldCoin for Identity and Transaction Security
The MoU between these organizations also outlines their intention to utilize WorldCoin's technology for more than just identity verification. The technology will help in carrying out secure transactions and other related functions that are part of Malaysia's digital economy. By adopting WorldCoin's biometric authentication system, Malaysia aims to establish a model for other countries looking to manage enhanced digital identities.
This comes after Malaysian authorities allowed trading of WorldCoin tokens through licensed digital asset exchanges. WorldCoin has come under regulatory scrutiny in various areas due to its intrusive and vulnerable biometric database.
For example, Germany’s Bavarian Data Protection Supervisory Authority and Hong Kong’s Data Protection Commissioner’s Office have temporarily suspended WorldCoin due to concerns about the collection and storage of biometric information.
However, WorldCoin is not going to stop expanding globally and intends to overcome these issues, adapt to local privacy regulations and continue developing new products in the field of digital assets.
