Harsh weather conditions are enough to trigger a headache for anyone, but temperature fluctuations can be even more problematic for migraine sufferers.
Dr. Rashmi Harkar Singh, a neurologist at the Mayo Clinic, says weather can trigger attacks for some migraine sufferers.
Migraines can be debilitating for some people, with severe throbbing headaches that often feel like your head is going to explode.
“People with migraines usually experience pain, usually moderate or severe pain, along with other symptoms that accompany it,” says Dr. Harkar Singh.
What causes migraines?
Migraines are a neurological disorder that affects different people in different ways. Some migraine sufferers also experience sensitivity to light, sound, and smells.
“It affects their quality of life and affects their day. They usually have unpredictable attacks,” Dr Harkar Singh explains.
Extreme weather can affect various changes in the brain that can lead to migraines.
“Many people say it's due to changes in air pressure or weather, but some say it's due to the heat,” Dr Harkar Singh said.
It is very important for migraine sufferers to maintain a regular routine, get plenty of exercise and rest, and staying hydrated during the summer is also important.
“You need to try to stay as hydrated as possible. Sometimes you don't realize you're dehydrated, it just happens,” she says.
