(Reuters) – Microchip Technology Inc (MCHP.O) said on Tuesday that an “unauthorized party” had disrupted the use of certain of its servers and some of its business operations, marking the latest security incident at a U.S. semiconductor maker this year.
Microchip said in the filing that it had begun steps to assess and contain the issue after detecting “potentially suspicious activity” on its IT systems on Saturday.
The company's shares fell about 2% in after-hours trading, and it said its manufacturing facilities were running at lower than normal levels, affecting its ability to fulfill orders.
This comes at a time when the company is grappling with a slowdown in chip orders as customers work through excess inventory built up during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Semiconductor giant Advanced Micro Devices Inc (AMD.O) also said earlier this year it was investigating claims that data had been stolen in a hack.
Microchip said it had shut down certain systems and launched an investigation with the help of outside cybersecurity advisers.
The company said the full extent, nature and impact of the incident are not yet known and it has not determined whether the incident may have a material effect on its financial position.
