Warsaw President Rafau Truzaskovsky appeared at the Munich Safety Conference on Friday. The candidates for the Citizens’ Union for the President of the Polish Republic were on a panel dedicated to strengthening democratic immunity for dangers from populism.
– Poland is a positive example of the fight against populism. Because we showed immunity and ultimately democracy won.
– We won because we had a strong civil society, a very strong non-governmental organization. He was very cautious in the 90s after regaining independence after the collapse of communism – explained Trzaskowski. Foresight was, in his opinion, about transferring some of the power to the hands of local governments. Since 2015, populists have not been able to master the country so easily, as most of the power in cities and regions remained in the hands of democratic troops.
Trzaskowski in Munich spoke about breaking the Polish constitution
Trzaskowski emphasized that at the time of danger, Russia had been able to communicate with the PI after the attack on Ukraine, the democratic military could communicate with the PI on the most important issues: the country’s security and advocacy capabilities.
Politicians reminded me that when PIS came to power in Poland, his friends in America and Europe claimed that this was nothing more than a Polish and Hungary issue. This shows that this is a broader issue of increased polarization enhanced by democracy and social media. “It’s multiple crisis,” he said.
When asked about the issue of democratic restoration, Trzaskowski pointed out the difficulty of reverse the case of constitutional breaking by the previous government. He turned his attention to the role of the president in the veto law. -We’re going back to the rule of law, but we have to win the presidential election – Trzaskowski said.
Warsaw President: People think more about the economy
Trzaskowski talked about something very important, but for many citizens, the rule of law is an abstract concept, making it difficult to translate what democracy is. “People are thinking more about the economy,” he emphasized. The advantage of Poles is to know what it means to live in a non-free system.
Democrats should focus in his opinion on being convinced that a particular issue can be solved better and more effectively, rather than going into an ideological debate.
In addition to Trzaskowski, the discussion was attended by Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gar Stoyle, US Sen. Elissa Slotkin.
