On Sunday, European Commission Director Ursula von der Leyen commented on the words of French President Emmanuel Macron.
– Nuclear deterrence has always been a national and national privilege, and this is why the Commission will not comment on these issues. She said during the meeting after a speech dedicated to the first 100 days of the EC’s new term.
100 days of EC. Von Der Leyen says about his defense investment plan
Von Der Leyen asked whether he would propose future EU joint debts to increase his investment in defense, replied that Europe was in a moment when he was not ruled out. The EC chairman called for the “historical” disposal plan announced last week. So far, she added – investment in the defense industry has been a strict territory for NATO.
-We are not only questioned that sovereignty, but also the iron commitment. Everything has become a transaction. Therefore, the pace of change must be accelerated and the actions needed must be brave and determined,” von der Reyen said.
Putting together the first 100 days of her new committee, she stressed that what changed at the time was the perception that taking certain actions was urgent because “something fundamental has changed.” – Our European values, democracy, freedom, and laws are threatened – she said.
According to the EC chair, the “27” leaders can mobilize up to 800 billion euros for defense by giving the top a green light on Thursday in Brussels. EUR 150 billion is a loan guaranteed by the EU budget and will be used by member states. However, the important part of money comes from the domestic budget. Member States can use the Milder EU budgetary regulations for Von Der Leyen to increase their defense spending.
“European shopping.” The need for rapid development of the defense industry
The EC chair also commented on the ongoing debate on whether EU money should be spent jointly on weapons imported from outside the Union, or whether it should be spent solely on European technology, as France hopes. Von Der Leyen said that if most of the 800 billion euros of funds were spent abroad it would not be beneficial to Europe. -We know we’re talking about the gradually increasing number of “buying Europe” – she pointed out.
She emphasized that she should consider what “European shopping” actually means. She noted that Norway, which is not in the EU, has “good” submarines. She also pointed to England. -We need to think about how to do that, but in general, our plans need to be translated to European research, development and new work as well – von der Leyen said.
-The reason we spend 80% today is that this happens gradually. Defence (purchasing weapons) outside the EU is urgently needed now, and there is no these abilities here – she said. The transition to European technology will require a change in the defensive industry, and the possibility of cooperation between European companies will be integrated and deepened.
See “European nuclear umbrellas.” The French President’s Declaration
In her opinion, the best example of this rapid development of the defense industry is Ukraine. – When the war began, there was little.
– You need to face a specific threat and unlock all possibilities. And if we can join forces with other similarly-minded countries like the UK, Norway and Canada, that possibility is even greater, von der Reyen said.
The head of the EC said that the US is an ally and despite the differences in the sentence, Europe and the US are connecting more than division. However, she added that there is no question about maintaining the model from the past 30 years, which has led to a major imbalance in the US, leading to a large part of the defence responsibility. “I need to do this homework,” she emphasized.
Meltz for close cooperation with Paris
German Prime Minister Friedrich Merz’s Christian Democratic candidate is in favour of cooperation in strengthening European nuclear deterrence. On Radio Germany’s German Funk on Sunday, he said his views on sharing nuclear weapons should be discussed with Paris and London.
– Europe still has two nuclear powers. They are France and England – Mertz said. In his opinion, conversations should always be held in terms of “of course we want to maintain” to supplement America’s nuclear umbrella.
Nuclear weapon sharing is part of the NATO deterrence concept. The United States grants access to nuclear bombs in the event of war. Bundeswehr has an airplane that allows American nuclear bombs to be transferred to designated purposes – the DPA agency writes.
Polish atomic weapons. Leszek Miller is involved
On Saturday, the programme “President and Prime Minister” Waldemar Polak, Kurzishtov Bilek, Rezzek Miller and Bronislaw Komorowski spoke about the international situation, including nuclear weapons. I would like to remind you that the French President was made public on this subject.
“This is a good time to think about whether Poland should have atomic weapons,” Leszek Miller said. He added that you still need to have the funds to transfer it. – These are very high quantities. I’m worried that the economy will collapse – he explained. Learn more here.
