Three people died and at least 32 were hospitalized after an outbreak of food poisoning in Teduray, Philippines. Everything indicates that the stew meat led them.
Vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain – these are the symptoms reported by residents of Teduray, a seaside town in Maguindanaoy del Norte province in the Philippines. Last week, dozens of them suffered from extremely dangerous food poisoning.

According to the BBC, the patients had to eat adobo, a traditional stew of meat (usually chicken) and vegetables simmered in vinegar and soy sauce. However, in this case sea turtle meat was used as the base. Everything indicates that this caused unexpected drunkenness.
At least 32 people required hospitalization as a result of poisoning. Three people did not survive. Local official Irene Dillo said the cause of death would be thoroughly investigated. Several dogs, cats and poultry are also known to have died after eating pieces of turtle meat used in goulash.

Although sea turtle meat may appear healthy at first glance, it may prove to be toxic after being heat-treated. This is all due to the influence of contaminated algae, which feeds the animals.
Local authorities battle sea turtle hunting
Philippine law states that hunting sea turtles, which are highly protected, is illegal. Unfortunately, for many residents whose cuisine is part of the traditional cuisine, this is not an obstacle. Additionally, their meat is used for medicinal purposes in some cultures of this country.
According to information from Philippine media, most of those hospitalized after being poisoned have already been discharged. Local lawmaker Datu Mohamad Sinsuat Jr. announced that efforts will be stepped up to enforce the ban on sea turtle hunting. He said such an incident would never happen again.
