The fighting was preceded by a shooting incident near a restaurant in the city. As a result, five people, including a 15-year-old boy, were seriously injured. The boy is in critical condition and fighting for his life. French authorities suspect both incidents are related to drug trafficking.

French Interior Minister Bruno Letaillot called the incident “a worrying sign of escalating violence.” “Shooting incidents don't happen in South America. They happen in Rennes and Poitiers in western France, which used to be famously peaceful,” the politician said.
He said France was “at a tipping point” and that the choice facing France was “either national mobilization or Mexicanization.” In this way, Letaillot alluded to Mexico's pervasive crime problem. Mayor Poitiers called the incident “another incident of violence that is unacceptable for the district.”
