Rescue operations on Madeira Island. A telephone pole got stuck on the island
A Polish couple was stranded on a cliff near Ponta do Pargo on the western Portuguese island of Madeira due to low tides. The rescue operation lasted several hours and ended on Saturday morning. Our compatriots had to spend last night in a nearby cave.
The administrator of Portugal’s National Maritime Administration (AMN) said local services received a warning signal on Friday night, but high waves made it difficult for Polish tourists to contact them.
The AMN statement said it had proved impossible to bring aid to the Poles “by sea or by air.” In the end they had to spend the night in one of the caves near the cliff.
