Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on a new national policy on nuclear deterrence. The law is already in force and states that even an invasion by a state without nuclear weapons, if supported by a state with nuclear weapons, will be considered a coordinated attack against the Russian Federation.
Moscow's military would then be able to use “all means available.” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stressed that the document should be analyzed immediately by Western countries.
Dmitry Medvedev: Ukraine could drag NATO into nuclear war
Former President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev was involved in the interpretation of the new defense principles. He posted a statement on the X website saying that missiles from NATO countries launched from Ukrainian territory could be treated as attacks by the alliance against his country.
“Russia could strike back with weapons of mass destruction wherever Kiev and NATO facilities are located. This would mean World War III,” Medvedev wrote.
Medvedev, who is known for his controversial comments, is not alone in his opinion, and Peskov expressed a similar tone. – The use of Western non-nuclear missiles against the Russian Federation by the Ukrainian military under the new doctrine could include a nuclear response, the spokesperson said.
The new principles were adopted shortly after outgoing US President Joe Biden on Sunday authorized Ukraine to use US long-range missiles to attack targets deep in Russia. Ukrainian media reported that Ukraine successfully used the weapon near the Russian town of Karchev, about 130 kilometers from the border. The Kremlin confirmed the attack, and the Russian Defense Ministry said five of the six missiles were destroyed.
