The America's Cup team will use Siemens Xcelerator software to create a digital twin to simulate the yacht's hydraulics and aero systems underwater through a virtual immersive experience.
Siemens Digital Twin Technology Gives Orient-Express Racing Team and K Challenge an Advantage in America's Cup
Siemens Digital Industries Software announced that the Orient-Express Racing Team is using Siemens' Xcelerator industry software portfolio to help it prepare for the upcoming 37th America's Cup and gain a competitive advantage.
Founded by sports technology company K-Challenge, the Orient-Express Racing Team brings together top French athletes, engineers, technicians and experts with the aim of winning the most prestigious international sailing competitions, including the America's Cup. Dominating this highly competitive environment is what drives the company's creativity and innovation.
The Orient-Express Racing team is working closely with Siemens Simcenter Engineering Services to understand the real-world performance of the hydraulic flight and aeronautical systems that control the actuation of the sails and rudder/foil flaps. Digital twins of these systems are being built, parameterized and functionally validated, and dedicated libraries ensure that the layouts and interfaces are comprehensive and easy to navigate in a multidisciplinary team effort spanning performance, mechatronics and hydraulics groups.
“Sailing has changed dramatically since the advent of foil technology that allows you to fly above the water surface. Managing two fluids and all the new aerospace flight technologies has become a real challenge as the game has completely changed,” said Stephan Kandler, CEO of K-Challenge and Orient Express Racing Team. “Digital twins and virtual testing have been a major step forward to enhance boat research and development in addition to real sailing. Having Siemens on our side was a key element not only for K-Challenge Racing & LAB's America's Cup strategy but also for other developments in the decarbonization of maritime transport.”
“Siemens is very proud to work with K-Challenge and the Orient-Express Racing team to support them in their challenge to win the 37th America's Cup race,” said Jean-Marie Saint-Paul, CEO of Siemens Digital Industries France and CEO of Siemens Digital Industries Software France. “The results achieved through our technical cooperation during the current and upcoming races demonstrate how the benefits of digital twins of complex systems can be harnessed with the use of real-time data in one of the most competitive sporting environments.”
Using the water data as a guide, if the team finds that performance is different from expectations, engineers can make changes to the system model (to find suspected leaks in the hydraulic system, for example) and try to match the simulation results with the data, making inspections and maintenance more accurate and efficient.
As the teams prepare for the race, there is also the possibility to use the same digital twin-based system model that is already prepared for real-time performance to stream live data from the race into the model and compare responses in real time. Additionally, when the boat is not on the water, the system model will be connected to the K-Challenge's virtual reality simulator. Finally, there is also the possibility to work out control strategies for the control system and virtually test multiple scenarios before testing them on the water.
