Swedish transportation offices analyze the causes of the collapse
The weekend was the biggest clash in Swedish history. Over 100 cars collided on the road. Several people were seriously injured and 103 received medical assistance.
Approximately 100 cars collided on road E18 between Enkoeping and Balsta, west of Uppsala. Several people were seriously injured and 103 received medical assistance. The hidden vehicle was served for several hours.
What was the reason for the conflict?
The initial report from the Swedish transportation office shows that the Roads Bureau had cleared the snow just before the accident. “In these conditions, salt is not the case, and swirling snow polishes the road surface and makes it extremely slippery” – highlighted in the report.
Ultimately, the service did not issue warnings about difficult weather conditions for drivers around the E18 road. It is unclear why the warning is missing.
Replacing the tires can prevent accidents
According to experts at Swedish road research and transport expert Matthias Hourt, the accident did not occur or more drivers with spiked tires were less effective. These types of tires provide better traction on the road.

Research based on the request of Swedish traffic offices shows that such tires are increasingly unpopular in Sweden. In the first quarter of 2024, 54% used them. Drivers, this percentage was 68% over 10 years ago.
However, these tires have their drawbacks – destroying road surfaces and damaging dust due to wear. For this reason, in Stockholm, cars with spiked tires were banned on one of the busy streets.
However, according to Mattias Hjorte, the growing popularity of all season tires is far worse than tires with spikes and winter treads, but it does have problems.
