The Struggle

The Struggle

I think it’s important to reevaluate your options and choices in life.  What works for you when you’re twenty might not work for you when you’re twenty-five.  What worked for you last year might not work for you this year.

A few years ago, I would have never thought I’d be living in Nashville.  I would have never thought I would have published three novels.  Ten years ago, I would have never thought I would have founded my own magazine and interviewed some of my favorite celebrities.  My point is you never know where life will lead you and not every decision has to lead to forever.

As everyone knows, StarShine Magazine has been my identity for so long that I feel like I can’t let it go completely.  However, I realize in order to fully take the next step in my writing career, I have to say goodbye to it.  Maybe for a year.  Maybe for five years.  Who knows?

“The Watch Dog” is my focus right now and I want to make it my best book yet.  I want to see it in bookstores.  I want to see my name on the New Times Bestsellers’ list one day.  By hiding behind StarShine’s dying brand, my writing is wavering along with it.

I tend to take on too much and therefore can’t fully bring any of my projects to their full capacity.  2012 will be the year my writing career breaks from the shadows and into the spotlight.  I spent years trying to help spread the word of so many celebrities—both new and old—and yet, I barely spent any time promoting my own name in comparison.

I’m taking down the StarShine Magazine section of the site as of November 1st.  I’m also deleting the sandy@starshinemag.com e-mail account as of then as well.  My interviews/articles can still be found in the archives.

I hope fans of StarShine Magazine understand.  I know I’ve been bipolar with this decision, but you can understand why.  It’s not something I can easily let go.  I actually have a journalism journal I kept and I would love to share with you some entries from it on occasion.  These entries are what I don’t get to tell you about in StarShine.  You’ll read the excitement I had, the accomplishments I achieved and the bad experiences I had as well.

Running a magazine practically alone for 10 years has been a constant struggle.  Allowing myself to be free of it will give me new focus and room for creativity in my writing projects.  I hope you guys will stick with me and check back at the site often.

Hugs, Kisses & Stars,

Sandy Lo

*I want to give a special thank you to my best friend Natalie Hoskins for being my sounding board, my positivity and assistant when I needed her the past 10 years! Love you.

Katy Perry Announces Additional Dates on the Hottest Tour of the Summer

Katy Perry Announces Additional Dates on the Hottest Tour of the Summer

Pop superstar Katy Perry has announced a series of brand-new U.S. dates on her California Dreams 2011 World Tour sponsored by Shick Quattro for Women ®. The new shows commence on September 7 following on the heels of the summer North American leg of the tour, which kicks off Stateside on June 7th in Atlanta and runs through August 14th with two shows in Katy’s Santa Barbara hometown. Katy just wrapped sold-out dates in the U.K. before heading to sold-out shows in Australia, New Zealand and Japan in May. North American dates feature a rotating group of exciting openers, including Robyn, Janelle Monáe, and Marina & The Diamonds. DJ Skeet Skeet performs on all dates.

Throughout the California Dreams Tour, Katy has been interacting with fans through social media networks. Concertgoers have been able to check in to venues using Facebook Places and Deals to receive special treats, as well as submit their Tweets via the “Tweet-to-Screen,” powered by social curation start-up Mass Relevance — giant on-stage screens that welcome fans to each show and display live fan photos and tweets (via dedicated show hashtags), giving everyone in the audience the chance to share their thoughts, excitement, and anticipation before Katy hits the stage. A mini-version of the “Tweet-to-Screen” will also appear on Katy’s tour diary (http://www.katyperry.com/tour-diary) to allow any fan anywhere in the world to participate in the excitement.

In addition, Katy has partnered with Tickets-for-Charity to offer special access to some of the best seats in the house on the California Dreams Tour. A portion of the proceeds from each purchase will benefit three charities that Katy has selected: Generosity Water, The Humane Society of the United States, and the Children’s Health Fund. To date, her fans have raised over $100,000 in charitable donations. A limited number of premium seats benefiting these great causes are available now for select tour dates on www.ticketsforcharity.com. Katy is also inviting local Red Cross representatives to her UK shows to collect donations and is donating the proceeds from a light wand sold at the shows to the Red Cross, raising over $20,000 to benefit those affected by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

In other Katy news, “E.T.,” the fourth single off Katy’s Grammy-nominated album Teenage Dream, today ascends to the top position on Billboard’s Pop Songs chart, becoming just the third album in the 18-year history of the chart to yield a quartet of No. 1s. The song follows “California Gurls,” featuring Snoop Dogg, the title cut and “Firework” to the top of the Nielsen BDS-based mainstream top 40 radio airplay ranking. (When “E.T.” ascended to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, where it has reigned the past three weeks, “Teenage Dream” similarly became only the ninth album to produce four No. 1s in the chart’s 52-year archives). The epic sci-fi music video for “E.T.,” directed by Floria Sigismondi and featuring Kanye West, premiered two weeks ago and has over 24 million views: http://www.vevo.com/watch/katy-perry/et/USCA31100006.

VIDEO PREMIERE: Lady Gaga "Born This Way"

This is the manifesto of Mother Monster… Watch the world premiere of Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” video, right now on Facebook & VEVO: http://on.fb.me/BTWMusicVideo

Lady Gaga – “Born This Way”

The clip was directed by Nick Knight, along with Lady Gaga, the Haus of Gaga creative team and choreographer Laurieann Gibson.

The pop star confirmed last week that she will unleash another “Born This Way” video as well. The second version, she says, “is a more stripped-down version of the song that will be released on iTunes and also released as an audio file. A portion of the money raised selling the song is actually going to go towards an anti-bully charity.”

“Born This Way” is available now for free with a pre-order of the Born This Way album from Target.com, and you can also snag the single on iTunes.

Britney Spears' New Album Titled "Femme Fatale"

Britney Spears' New Album Titled "Femme Fatale"

The reigning pop princess announced the title of her 7th studio album today: Femme Fatale.  Spears says the title is a tribute to bold, empowered, confident, elusive, fun, flirty women and men. It’s not a conceptual album, Spears is letting the music speak for itself. She’s worked hard on it for two years and she considers it to be her “best album to date,” true to where she is now personally and professionally.

Femme Fatale (Jive Records) is executive produced by Max Martin and Dr. Luke.

Spears is peerless among her contemporaries. Throughout the years, Britney has consistently released hit after hit for over a decade, selling close to 70 million albums cumulatively worldwide.

Few artists have earned the distinction of having five No.1 albums, and 24 Top 40 hits. She most recently set a new one-day precedent for single sales with her current No. 1 hit song, “Hold It Against Me.” (<– Click to listen). Jonas Åkerlund shot the video for the song.

Details on the video premiere and album release date are forthcoming.

GET THIS: THIS IS WAR Deluxe Edition – 30 Seconds To Mars

GET THIS: THIS IS WAR Deluxe Edition – 30 Seconds To Mars

More and more people around the world have been hearing about 30 Seconds To Mars.  FINALLY!  With the attention from MTV and VH1, it’s only a matter of time before the Echelon (3oSTM’s devout fans) will expand even more.  Beware new 30STM fans: As the “Closer To The Edge” video states, “Yes, this is a cult.”  In no way is that a bad thing, either.  I had followed the band’s career here and there over the past 12 years.  “The Kill” and “A Beautiful Lie” had been in my iTunes library for a long time, but it wasn’t until 2009 when I was looking for more rock music to inspire me while writing my novel “Dream Catchers” that I decided to give some of the band’s other songs a listen.  Once I started downloading (legally, of course!), I couldn’t stop!  I bought the first two albums by the band and had to know when the next one would be released!  Their music is insanely infectious and intricately done.  I’ve never seen any artist put so much into everything like these guys do.

Needless to say when their latest album THIS IS WAR was released – I was excited to not only get to review the album, but interview the band’s drummer, Shannon Leto and review 2 of their shows.  If you ever get the chance to see 30 Seconds To Mars live, take it!  You will never be disappointed.

With all of that said, I want to make clear that this post is NOT for the Echelon.  You all know how wonderful this band is already.  I’m not writing this because 30STM’s label, Virgin wants me to – even though I am grateful for them hooking me up time and again!  And I’m not writing this because Jared Leto has incredible blue eyes.  (Even though he really does!)

The reason I am writing this is to tell anyone who’s a fan of music and art to buy the deluxe edition of THIS IS WAR.  With 3 bonus tracks and a DVD, this is the ultimate starter kit to introduce you to this epic band!  The band’s upcoming single “Hurricane”, which is one of my favorite tracks on the album is now included on the album featuring Kanye West.  The video is in post-production now and from the teaser the band sent out, it looks like it’s going to attract a lot of attention!  The DVD included with the deluxe album features music videos for “Closer To The Edge” and “Kings and Queens”, along with insightful footage of the band making the video.

No matter what your musical tastes are–be it rock, pop, R&B, contemporary, classical–there is something remarkable about 30 Seconds To Mars’ sound that crosses boundaries.  If you don’t want to commit to an entire album, try some tracks out on iTunes.  My recommendation is: “Alibi”, “Hurricane”, “Closer To The Edge” and “Night Of The Hunter”.  However, I don’t have a doubt in my mind that once you download one song, you’ll be able to stop there.  You can pick up THIS IS WAR Deluxe Edition at any music retailer!  Just get it and thank me later ;-)

BLOG: Starbucks Event a Success!

BLOG: Starbucks Event a Success!

The past week has been a bit crazy! Being a new self-published author, I obviously don’t make a living off of it. It’s no big secret that I work full-time at Starbucks. It’s not a bad gig, honestly. I have a flexible schedule and can transfer anywhere around the world if I wanted to! Working as a barista also gives me the opportunity to meet some pretty amazing people! Some of my close friends are or were Starbucks employees and some of my most loyal supporters are customers.

I was lucky enough that my store manager said YES immediately to the idea of having me sign and sell copies of “Dream Catchers” last week.  I was nervous for it.  This wasn’t like any event I’ve had before where it was strictly for my event with my friends and family attending.  I’ve only worked at the Starbucks in Hauppauge for six months, so most of our customers didn’t know that I’m a writer.

So many of them were so supportive and excited to buy an autographed copy of my book!  Even customers I had never seen before bought the book!  It was quite a successful day!  I was even asked by another Starbucks to have an event there in the future.  To make things even better, ever since that day, I’ve been selling books everyday at work!  I even had a couple of people finish “Dream Catchers” and tell me they loved it so much they ordered “Lost In You” online!  What an enormous compliment that is to me!!!

As you can imagine, this has motivated me to do more events, to promote more to new markets.  Well, a reader of mine in Spain (Mary), who’s a fellow BSB fan asked me to come do an event in Miami in December.  The Backstreet Boys’ cruise is leaving from Miami and Mary thought it would be a good idea for me to do an event for all of their fans!  The boy band in “Lost In You” was inspired by BSB, so there is relevance :)

Nothing is definite yet, but I’ve been looking into book stores and hotels in Miami.  I also contacted BSB’s publicist to set up a new interview while (if) I’m in town.  I’ll keep you posted on all of this!

Anyway, this week has been a bit rough other than the compliments on my writing.  Work has been busy.  Today was my only day off, but my brother is out of town so I’ve been helping my sister-in-law more with the kids.  I am excited for Halloween though!  I’m going to be a vampire.  Keeping it simple.  I’d love to hear what everyone else is going to be.  Post your costumes below!

Well, that’s all for now.  I will post my interview with Greyson Chance within the next few days.  Remember all things StarShine are now on this site.  Follow me on Twitter for entertainment news and updates on me: www.twitter.com/authorsandylo.  Thanks to everyone who’s supported both me and the magazine over the years!

Twilight star, Peter Facinelli supports Sandy Lo by posing with her debut novel, Lost In You.

After making StarShine Magazine a household name among entertainment fans and industry insiders alike since 2001–founding editor, Sandy Lo has decided to take things in a new direction.  In a recent blog post on www.sandy-lo.com, Lo discusses her struggle to juggle many avenues of her career.  Since forming StarShine, Lo has also moonlighted as an entertainment publicist and more recently, a self-published author with 2 novels under her belt.

“I love the opportunities running StarShine Magazine has brought me–I wouldn’t be where I am today without it,” Lo says.  “But I have decided to focus more on my writing career as well as working as a publicist.”  Lo debated on putting StarShine Magazine to bed, but she knew that was out of the question.  “It would be like giving up a child for me.”

Instead, StarShine Magazine will live on via Sandy Lo’s personal website: www.sandy-lo.com.  StarShine will be a section on the site where articles, interviews, and entertainment news will still be posted, but will give Lo a chance to focus on promoting her own artistry as well, such as her novels as well as her songwriting.
