In September, non-credit and credit obligations of consumers increased by PLN 2.9 billion or 3.5% compared to a year ago. Thus, they reached a record level of PLN 86.5 billion – according to BIG InfoMonitor.
“Approximately 2.6 million people have problems paying their bills, which is roughly the same as the combined population of Warsaw and Wroclaw,” the study said.
“Financial problems of Poles are getting worse”
The publication notes that the growth rate of Poles' debt has “slowed down” since a year ago its growth was PLN 6.6 billion (8.4%). “Currently, although the total debt reached a record value at the end of September (…), the number of unsecured debtors has decreased by 116,790 people,” the report said. It was added that the number of debtors and debtors decreased by 55,000 people at the same time. total of 484 thousand people.
“As a result, the average overdue liability of a person due to unpaid rent, alimony, loan installments, loans, court fees, fines for driving without a ticket and current accounts, including telephone or internet, increased by PLN 2,525 to almost PLN 33 , 5000 PLN”, is indicated.
According to the authors of the report, this means that “the old financial problems of Poles will worsen”. According to a study commissioned by BIG InfoMonitor, 60% of people in debt say that the increase in the cost of living will create debt and make it difficult to pay it back. More than a third of them (38%) admitted to having financial problems, although, as mentioned, this is the lowest result in three years.
“49% of Poles did not feel a lack of money for current obligations and capital expenditures, which is the most favorable result of 2019.” – added. Increase in unpaid non-credit liabilities
BIG InfoMonitor said, “the increase in overdue debts of Poles is still worrying.”

In turn, outstanding loans, as reported, increased by more than PLN 2.4 billion (+6.5%) to more than PLN 39.7 billion, with approximately 1.1 million Poles currently in debt. Debt and age
The authors of the report also considered the distribution of debt by age and gender. As for the regions, the inhabitants of Mazovia have the most outstanding debts (almost PLN 17 billion). Then there are Upper and Lower Silesia (PLN 9.9 billion and PLN 7.8 billion, respectively). Residents of Opole, Swichtokrzyskie and Podlaski voivodships have the least amount of debt – PLN 1.7 billion respectively.
“The amount of debt of Polish residents increased the most in Masovia, West Pomeranian and Lower Silesian voivodeships – by 6.4%, 5.5% and 5.4% respectively.” – reported the authors of the report. They also noted that in Silesia, despite having one of the highest credit values, a 1.2% decrease was recorded. The number of debtors decreased in every voivodeship, but especially in Silesia voivodeship (-6.7 percent), Švejtokriskie voivodeship (-5.5 percent) and Kujawi Pomnr voivodeship (-4.9 percent).
Record holder in debt
BIG InfoMonitor also looked at the record holders whose debt increased by more than PLN 18.4 million during the year, reaching a total of more than PLN 535 million.
According to BIG InfoMonitor, the top ten debtor Poles have not changed a bit, one woman has joined this group, currently there are four of them. The record holder is a 68-year-old resident of the Lublin region with an amount of more than PLN 90 million. The oldest debtor on record is 74 years old.
