The world's largest crocodile in captivity has died in a wildlife reserve in Australia.
Cassius was almost 18 feet (5.5 m) long, weighed almost a ton, and was thought to be at least 110 years old – although no one was sure.
The massive saltwater crocodile had been living in an island sanctuary off the coast of Queensland since it was captured in Australia's Northern Territory in the 1980s.
In 2011, he obtained the Guinness World Record for the largest crocodile in captivity.
Marineland Melanesia Crocodile Habitat said in a social media post that Cassius was “our beloved companion” and “a cherished member of our family”.
Cassius had previously lived in the wild, where he was known to catch and eat livestock and attack boat propellers before being captured.
Habitat founder George Craig bought Cassius in 1987, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported.
Cassius “brought joy and companionship to his best friend George for over 37 years,” the habitat said.
The habitat added that Mr Craig moved to Cairns last month and Cassius' health deteriorated shortly after.
“He was very old and was thought to live beyond the years of a wild crocodile,” the post said.
The habitat also thanked “everyone who visited Cassius throughout his life and showed kindness,” adding that the site may operate “with limited capacity over the coming days.”
