This is becoming commonplace as the Alaska primary draws to a close. In the Matt-Su Valley, Republicans in the 25th District voted to endorse Nick Begich for Congress.
This makes Begich the eighth Republican district committee member to endorse him, despite three other Republicans running to unseat Democratic Rep. Mary Peltola's seat.
District 25 is in the Palmer area and is represented in the Alaska State Legislature by Republican Rep. Delena Johnson. Rep. Johnson was recommended along with House Speaker Kathy Tilton, who represents District 26. Tom Burgee was recommended for the Board of Education and Mayor Edna DeVries was recommended for another term as mayor of the Matanuska-Susitna Borough.
The 25th District joins the 6th, 8th, 23rd, 26th, 29th, 34th and 36th Districts in endorsing Nick Begich.
The endorsement brings the percentage of Republican districts in the state above the 22% held by Rep. Nick Begich, who is running for his second House seat.
No other Republican candidate has received the endorsement of a district or women's club. Begich has the endorsement of six of the seven Republican women's clubs and two chapters of the Alaska Republican Party Youth Chapter.
He is the only candidate who signed a petition calling for the abolition of ranked-choice voting and the only candidate who has said he will drop out of the race if he is no longer the Republican front-runner after the primary.
Voting for the primary election has already begun, with early voting in person and by absentee ballot. Election Day is August 20, and polls will close at 8pm.
