Thursday marks 30 years since Ukraine signed the Budapest Memorandum of Understanding. Kiev then agreed to transfer nuclear weapons to Russia. In return, the United States, Britain, and the Kremlin pledged to respect Ukraine's territorial integrity and sovereignty.
On the eve of this anniversary, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine issued a statement. It was recalled that Moscow did not keep its promises to attack its own country in 2014 and 2022.
Ukraine. Ministry of Foreign Affairs statement. About joining NATO
Ukraine described the experience of non-compliance with the terms of the agreement signed in 1994 as “bitter”. “The Memorandum of Understanding was intended to be an important step in strengthening global nuclear disarmament and serve as a model for other countries to abandon their nuclear weapons,” we read.
Then there were words about the “monument to myopia”, which the countries fighting Russia cannot buy again. “Developing the European security architecture without taking into account Ukraine's interests and at their expense is doomed to failure,” the statement stressed.
The conclusion stated that Kiev would reject in advance any guarantees in lieu of joining the North Atlantic Alliance. “We do not settle for any substitutes or substitutes,” it says.
“We are convinced that the only real guarantee of Ukraine's security and deterrent against further Russian aggression against Ukraine and other countries is full membership in NATO,” he said.
Ukraine wants NATO. Appeal to four countries
Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has appealed to the United States, the United Kingdom, as well as France and China (both countries have also signed a memorandum of understanding) for political support to invite Ukraine to the NATO organization. The law aims to “effectively counter Russian threats.”
It is no coincidence that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' statement was released two days before the 30th anniversary of the signing of the memorandum. Ukraine's foreign affairs chief Andriy Sibikha is scheduled to present the document at the NATO ministerial meeting starting Tuesday in Brussels.
