Kemi Badenoch received 53,806 Conservative votes and his opponent Robert Jenrick received 41,388 votes, leaving 131,680 people eligible to vote, of which 655 votes were invalid. It was regarded as Voter turnout was 72.8%.
UK: Kemi Badenoch becomes new Conservative Party leader
Mr Badenoch will replace former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who led the Conservative Party to its worst result since 1832 in the July 2024 general election. The party lost more than 200 seats in the lower house, reducing its number to 121 members.
The Guardian reports that Badenoch hopes to have a new shadow cabinet ready by Tuesday, when the new leadership will hold its first meeting. Party leaders do not intend to announce any candidates on Saturday.
Mr Badenoch was congratulated on social media by Prime Minister Keir Starmer. “The arrival of our first black female leader is a proud moment for our country. We look forward to working with you and your party in the interests of the British people,” the British government leaders wrote.
The new leader of the Conservative Party is a 44-year-old former programmer. She was born in London to Nigerian parents and became the first black woman to lead a major British political party. He advocates low taxes and free markets and criticizes multiculturalism.
