A severe snowstorm hit seven U.S. states under a state of emergency. All of this is accompanied by freezing rain and frost, something the United States hasn’t seen in more than a decade. Up to 300,000 customers are without power and warnings have been issued in other parts of the country. So far, authorities have reported three deaths from the winter attacks.
A state of emergency related to dangerous weather has been declared in parts of Kentucky, Missouri, Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, Arkansas, and New Jersey. In some cases, schools and offices may be closed on Mondays. “In some areas, this could be the heaviest snow in at least a decade,” the service said.

The cause of the extreme phenomenon is the polar vortex, a band of cold air that circulates around the North Pole.
