Homewood High School is ranked the top traditional public school in the state, according to U.S. News & World Report's 2024 rankings. Two magnet programs, in Montgomery and Huntsville, were also highly rated by the news agency.
Montgomery's Lovelace Academic Magnet Program (LAMP) was ranked 21st among public high schools in the country – the only school in Alabama to make the top 100.
“The 2024 Best High Schools rankings provide a starting point for parents to understand a school's academic performance, whether it's a school they're considering attending or one their children already attend,” said U.S. News Education Editor-in-Chief Lamont Jones. “Accessible data about high schools can empower families across the country as they navigate today's education environment and plan for the future.”
U.S. News' public high school rankings are based on test scores in math, reading and science. Top-ranked schools also boast “disadvantaged student achievement, college readiness, curriculum breadth and high graduation rates. College readiness specifically measures participation and performance on AP and International Baccalaureate exams,” according to a press release from the news site.
According to the rankings, the top public high school in the country is BASIS Charter School in Peoria, Arizona.

National Ranking
In addition to the overall rankings, U.S. News also ranked the top STEM schools, charter schools and magnet schools across the nation.
Mountain Brook High School is ranked 87th, making it the only Alabama high school ranked in the top 100 nationally. Last year it was ranked 103rd.
Two Alabama schools ranked among the top 100 magnet programs nationally, with LAMP coming in at No. 9. New Century Technology High School in Huntsville is ranked No. 60 nationally. Last year, New Century was ranked 80th.
Top 25 High Schools in Alabama
For the fourth year in a row, U.S. News has named Montgomery's LAMP the best high school in Alabama. Three Shelby County schools are in the top 25 this year. Madison City and Hoover City high schools have two in the top 25. All but four schools were in the top 25 last year as well. One school jumped from #58 to #20.
