Jan Emil Mlinarski and friends perform the hits of Jerzy “Dudus” Matuszkiewicz. Stefanex disco orchestra with guest Beata Kozidrak will remind you of the hits close to the heart of every millennial. Anna Senyuk talks about her artistic path and life experience in her monodrama. These are only excerpts from the rich program of the Niewinni Czarodzieje festival, which starts on Wednesday in Warsaw.
The 19th edition of the Festival of Innocent Witches will be held under the slogan “On the Carousel of Life”, taken from the opening credits of the series “Chterdziestolatka”. The reason for such a topic was the anniversary. The first episodes of the still popular series about the professional and personal adventures of engineer Stefan Karvovsky were produced in 1974, exactly 50 years ago.
– It's not just about feelings, Dariusz Gavin, the deputy director of the Warsaw Uprising Museum, which organizes this event, said at the press conference. – Screenwriters Krzysztof Teodor Toeplitz and Jerzy Gruza wanted to present a character who is going through a mid-life crisis, but they wanted to show it in an interesting way. They were brilliant observers of everyday life. There are about 150 characters in the series, which is a wonderful gallery of characters, he noted.
He added that although times have changed and we look different, “everyone is going through a midlife crisis,” only the boundaries are changing. – We have the same problems, the world has not changed in this regard, – Gavin argued about the importance of “Czterdziestolatka”. – This series is not only funny, but wise, full of warm wisdom of life. The absolute pearl of Polish culture of the second half of the 20th century, he said.
Mlinarsky celebrates “Dudusia”.
Director of the Warsaw Uprising Museum, Jan Oldakowski, noted that this performance is also “an example of the wonderful relationship between creators of high and popular culture.” Don't look too far for this observation to be true. The title song “Czterdzieści lat sie” for this once-in-a-lifetime TV series was written and performed by a musician from the elite world of jazz – Jerzy “Dudus” Matiszkiewicz. The same person who portrayed the series “Alternatives 4” and “Janosik” with equal success with music. We will hear his songs during the concert in Proxima (November 29), produced by Jan Emil Mlynarski.
– This is a big thing for me. Jerzy Dudush Matuszkiewicz is a friend of my family and a symbolic figure for Warsaw, its golden age in social, jazz and student life, – said Mlynarski. And he remembered that the composer met his father Wojciech at the Hybrydy club. – They became friends and created a song together – he added. “Oh, when Dudush was playing, he was crazy” – Wojciech Mlynarski sang figuratively about his friend in one of his songs.
– Tradition is important in jazz like nowhere else, looking up to older colleagues is part of that path. “Dudus” was always our best friend, he never created distance, he always had time for us, even though he was a giant – said Jan Emil Mlinarski. This intergenerational jazz relay will continue as he has invited the youth to collaborate.
– We organized a concert that relates to the tradition of “Dudus” as a composer, but also as a jazzman. We start with the most important American themes performed by Melomany (this is one of the first jazz groups in Poland, which Matuszkiewicz joined in the late 1940s – ed.), then move on to his film and television compositions and finish. with his songs. Everything is performed by a sextet of young musicians half my age. I see them as music lovers in their twenties looking for something new. This is the energy I wanted to capture. I also invited the outstanding young singer Natalya Schroeder to participate, – described Mlinarsky.
A symbolic link between history and today will also be trombonist Jacek Namysłowski, son of Zbigniew, one of the most important saxophonists in the history of Polish jazz, also a member of the band Melomany.

Kozidrak invites you to dance
Dance is also a regular part of the Innocent Witches program. It is no coincidence that this year it will be held at the “Palladium” club (November 23).
– its exterior is torn (filling of the tunnel along Zlota street is ongoing – ed.). We decided to expand the construction area and address it scenographically, – explained the organizer of the dance, Agnieszka Sulejewska. We remind you that most of the series took place during the construction of the Central station. But many scenes took place within the four walls of Stefan and Magda Karvovsky's apartment, which is also on display at the Palladium. – From the construction site through a characteristic arch (as in the apartment of the Karvovsky family – ed.) you enter the party of Stefan and Madzia, – described Suleevska. – Musically, we pay respect to today's 40-year-old generation, we perform songs that thousands of years danced in discotheques, – he announced.
The Stefanex Disco Orchestra will perform under the leadership of Jakub Lubovic and Beata Kozidrak will be a special guest. – We have been trying for five years and finally managed to arrange the dates, – revealed Agnieszka Suleivska.
Senyuk sat down and got up
“The Book of Herbs” (etc.), i.e. sitting! – this is the title of Anna Senyuk's monodrama, i.e. Magda Karvovska in the Rampa theater series (December 1). “He is a completely original statement on the stage. A kind of review of his artistic path and life experience. The outstanding actor takes the audience on a theatrical and poetic journey and leads it with his unique intelligence, wit, wit and charm.” organizers. After the performance, there will be a meeting with the actress.
On the stage of this theater (November 30), the team of the film “Improvisation” will read the letters of the readers of the weekly newspaper “Przyatsyulka” from the 70s. “We offer a musical event in the form of a recital, during which we hear improvised songs inspired by personal stories, problems or dreams; issues both serious and trivial. Unique songs thanks to you and in front of you will never happen again,” encourage improvisers. female singers.
How has Centralny aged?
Does architecture have a shelf life? Why can some buildings age while others do not stand the test of time? How does the central railway station, built by engineer Karvovsky, compare in this context? These questions will be discussed by the participants of the debate at the Zodiac Pavilion (November 22): Patrica Jastrzebska, Filip Springer, Grzegorz Mika, Jaroslav Tribus.
“Was Stefan Karwowski a fan of Perfect or did he prefer Czeslaw Niemen's songs? What cassettes did Jagoda and Marek hide from their parents, was their idol Cora or maybe Kate Bush? What about Magda – did ABBA play in her soul?” What if we had the characters of the TV series “Chterdziestolatka” listen to Polish rap and who listens to jazz?” Music reporters: Damian Sikorski, Aleksandra Budka, Adam Smolarek, Tomasz Zda, Leszek Gnoynski talk about this topic on Radio Czwórka (November 20).
Justyna Đbik-Kluge, Cleo Chwiek, Katarzyna Krzywicka and Lidia Popiel start with the image of a working woman who is not afraid of anything and think about professional habits and the role of women in society (November 25, “Faktikzny dom kultury”).
A Sociological Comparison of 1974 and 2024 by Joanna Fliess, Joanna Chmura, Machei Markis, Ph.D. hub Iwona Kurz, Lukasz Sadowski (November 27, Big Book Cafe MDM). Mateusz Adamczyk, Krzysztof Tomasik, Ewa Stusinska, Agata Stola (November 28, MAL Kasprovica 14) take on the traditions and closeness of the “Forties” era.
