In Hungary, the opposition party TISZA opposes Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz. Against the backdrop of the government’s declining ratings, opposition leader Peter Magyar is calling for early elections. As recent polls show, Fidesz and TISHA parties are neck and neck. At the same time, Orbán’s propaganda machine is trying to portray the opposition politician as a puppet of the Brussels elite.
Peter Magyar started the new year with a bang. In a speech published on social networks, the leader of the Hungarian opposition asked Viktor Orbán to announce new elections as soon as possible. He accused him of treason. The devastating criticism of the Hungarian Prime Minister has broken popularity records.
– Unprecedented destruction and mismanagement. No more. The nation says enough. We don’t have any more time, so we won’t give you another chance. It’s time for new elections in Hungary. Set the election day as soon as possible so that our country does not waste time, – says the leader of the opposition party in the recording.

Peter Magyar is in full swing. His Respect and Freedom Party, or TISHA, has lost to the ruling Fidesz in several polls. The average results of all recent polls show that both sides are neck and neck.
When the Brussels-based website Politico included Magyar in its list of Europe’s most influential figures in 2025, it wrote that “Peter Magyar represents the first serious and credible challenge to Viktor Orbán in his 14-year rule.”

He belonged to Orbán’s party for many years
Parliamentary elections in Hungary are scheduled for 2026. Orbán will certainly not organize an early vote.
– This entire state apparatus, which is completely controlled by Orbán, can still achieve a lot through propaganda and campaigns. We remind you that before the previous elections, the United Opposition also performed better than Fidesz in public opinion polls, and despite this, Fidesz won with a huge margin in 2022 – notes prof. Maciej Kisilovsky of the Central European University in Vienna.
Peter Magyar is a man from nowhere. The 43-year-old lawyer belonged to Orbán’s party for years and is the ex-husband of Justice Minister Judith Varga. Less than a year ago, Magyar quickly gained popularity when he openly opposed the government. In June, he became a member of parliament. He accuses Orbán of turning Hungary into a mafia state, the most corrupt country in the European Union.
– You had 15 years to repair this country and great opportunities. Two-thirds of the majority, billions from Europe, the growth of the world economy. But instead of repairing the country and putting it on the path of development, you stole it, degraded it, squeezed it like a lemon, and finally divided the Hungarians, – Pyotr Magyar emphasizes.

Magyar is often called a lighter version of Orbán – he is not as anti-EU as the Hungarian prime minister, but he is also hard to call an enthusiast. Like Orbán, he is not in favor of helping Ukraine, but he is also far from Putin. When Hungary granted asylum to Marcin Romanovsky, the opposition leader said that Orbán was unnecessarily involving the country in international scandals.
Orbán’s propaganda machine portrays Magyar as a puppet of Ursula von der Leyen and other Brussels officials. The first ribbons and ribbons appear.

– Judith Varga accuses him of physical and verbal violence. He does not defend himself very convincingly. One of his other loves, Mrs. Evelyn Vogel, publishes secret recordings (…) in which she speaks badly about voters, journalists and colleagues of her party. Therefore, it is not an ideal candidate, – says prof. Machei Kisilovsky.
Before next year’s elections, the economy will be the main issue. In 2023, Hungary will become the poorest country in the European Union in terms of consumption. Now they have also irretrievably lost a billion euros in EU anti-corruption funds. This is the first such case in the history of the European Union.
