TLC's “1,000-Pound Sisters” has given the world the opportunity to follow the weight loss journey of Kentucky sisters Tammy and Amy Slaton. Since the show began, the sisters have successfully lost weight and have been very public about how they did it.
It's only natural that details are vague, considering the show premiered in 2020. Not only that, but the show hasn't aired a new episode in nearly a year, and a lot has happened since then.
While Amy isn't as active on social media as her sister Tammy, she has shared some updates on her weight loss journey. Here's where she's been and where she is now.
Did Amy Slaton have bariatric surgery?
Yes, Amy underwent bariatric surgery in 2019. As she said on the show, she decided to have bariatric surgery because she wanted to be a mother.
After losing nearly 100 pounds following her surgery, Amy immediately visited her OB-GYN to make sure there weren't any other obstacles in her path to motherhood. “Becoming a mother means the world to me, seriously. I can't even put into words how much I want to be a mother, so I had weight loss surgery,” she said in one episode.
Amy has since become mother to two sons, 3-year-old Gage and 2-year-old Glenn, with ex-husband Michael Holtermann.
How did Amy Slaton lose weight?
In addition to bariatric surgery, Amy has also changed her diet, and according to Us Weekly, she now eats smaller meals, lower carbs and more protein.
Amy planted a vegetable patch so that produce would always be available for her and her family, and her son Gage is a big fan.
“Gage will eat Brussels sprouts. He'll eat broccoli. He'll eat cauliflower. He'll eat all of that stuff,” she told People magazine in December.
For exercise, Amy takes walks in the park with her sons. She and Tammy have also participated in various fitness classes, including swimming, virtual reality, personal training, and group workouts.
Ultimately, Amy says she is committed to raising her sons in a healthier environment than the one she and Tammy grew up in.
“I try to be there for them as much as I can,” she told People magazine. “If they're not with their daddy, they're with me. I know mommy can't always do that.”
How much did Amy Slaton weigh?
Amy said in front of the 1,000-Pound Sisters cameras that she began her weight loss journey when she weighed 406 pounds. When she last spoke about her weight loss in 2023, she had lost 176 pounds, according to People.
Now, she is more focused on her mental health than on weight loss.
Amy revealed in December that she'd been diagnosed with bipolar disorder after an argument with her sister during a trip to Florida. “I'm not that kind of person,” she told People magazine. “I don't want to be that kind of person.”
As well as bipolar disorder, Amy was also diagnosed with depression and acute stress due to her divorce. “It's a relief to know I'm not going crazy – that's a whole other issue. I'm not just mad because I'm mad, I'm mad because I'm bipolar,” she said.
She is now in therapy and taking medication, and Amy said she is trying to stay positive by “talking to Tammy, spending as much time as possible with my kids and family, and surrounding myself with love, light and my puppy.”
