Eating habits based on processed foods and white bread are becoming more and more common all over the world. They replace traditional local diets that affect social health. Research conducted in Africa shows that there is little time to feel the negative effects of changing menus.
Typical diets in many parts of Africa are rich in vegetables, fruits, legumes, full grains and fermented products. This type of food is increasingly giving way to Western diet, a distinctive feature of developed countries. What will the outcome be? This was checked by an international team of scientists.
They changed their diet. The effect was immediate
This experiment was conducted by researchers at Niemigen University in the Netherlands and Ladbud University at KCMC University in Tanzania. This study focuses on 77 healthy men in Tanzania. Some participants who previously used traditional diets consumed a diet characteristic of Western culture for 14 days. Others went to the local menu at the same time. In the third group we saw the traditional fermented banana drink – MBEGE every day.

Participants were tested two weeks later and several weeks later. Among other things, we analyzed the effects of the immune system, course of metabolic processes, and levels of inflammatory markers in the blood. The results were amazing. The transition to the Western diet led to the activation of biological mechanisms associated with civilized diseases. Symptoms of inflammation and weakening of immunity were also observed, as reported in Nature Medicine.
Such a body response can lead to the development of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and accelerated tissue aging.
Traditional dietary use or regular drinking of MBEGE drinks contributes to the reduction of inflammatory markers. Additionally, some of the changes that were changed after the study was completed – this was confirmed by the results of subsequent measurements made four weeks later.
Processed foods and chronic diseases
Quirijn de Mast, a physician at the University of the Netherlands, pointed out elements of Western diet that can have negative health effects. These products include highly processed calorie foods such as:
White bread, fries, salt-rich dishes, refined sugar and saturated fat.

Researchers say chronic inflammation may be one of the mechanisms that lead to many diseases.
The official announcement of Radboud UMC was given the exact foods of participants in the experiment. Some of the unhealthy dishes included large quantities of meat, pizza, pasta and pancakes, particularly with limited participation in vegetables and fruits. The traditional menu in the Kilimanjaro region has affected the body with more vegetables, fruits, beans, grains such as millet and brown rice.
