The New York Giants resumed practice on Sunday for the first time since their preseason opener against the Detroit Lions and welcomed back offensive lineman Evan Neal, but first-round draft pick Malik Neighbors left practice late with a suspected mild sprain in his left ankle.
The nature of Neighbors' injury is unclear, but the sixth overall draft pick was evaluated by trainers on the sideline. The Louisiana State University product removed his shoes and socks and then sat on a chest to watch the end of the workout. Neighbors limped off the field after practice, and the Giants released the results of the ankle evaluation about an hour later.
Neighbors was a star of training camp, catching long passes from Daniel Jones and turning short passes into long runs, but he did not appear with the media covering the team after the workout.
Coach Brian Daboll said before practice that he expected Jones to play when the Giants (1-0) face the Texans (1-0) in Houston in their second preseason game on Saturday. The third-year coach said everything has to go well in practice for Jones to play in a game for the first time since tearing his ACL against Las Vegas on Nov. 5. Jones had surgery around Thanksgiving.
