Trina Solar, a global leader in smart photovoltaic (PV) and energy storage solutions, plans to expand its hybrid solar PV projects across Southeast Asia. The move follows the successful launch of Malaysia's largest hybrid solar PV project, a 100 MWac plant in Merchan, Terengganu.
Implemented by Cypark Resources Berhad, the project combines 35MW of floating solar panels with 65MW of ground-mounted solar panels and is expected to offset 202,024 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year. Installed on a lake close to the sea, the floating solar segment benefits from the cooling effect of water and reduced evaporation, while the ground-mounted system takes advantage of the reflective properties of the white sand.
Elva Wang, head of Southeast Asia for Trina Solar, praised the success of this project and highlighted the great potential for similar large-scale hybrid solar PV projects in the region. “The success of this complex project is a testament to its design and implementation. We foresee great potential for the integration of both floating and ground-mounted solar PV plants in Southeast Asia,” said Wang.
The plant uses Trina Solar's Vertex 590-595W bifacial modules, known for their durability in humid and salty coastal environments. These modules have been certified by TÜV Rheinland for their performance under harsh conditions. Their bifacial design captures sunlight from both sides to generate more power, and their high efficiency of up to 21.4% helps reduce energy costs.
Saipark Resources Chairman Dato' Ami Morris highlighted the importance of the project: “This is the largest hybrid solar power plant in Malaysia and demonstrates our ability to combine solar power with Terengganu's natural environment,” he said.
Trina Solar is committed to promoting hybrid solar technology and supporting Southeast Asia's renewable energy goals, in line with Malaysia's goal of 70% renewable energy by 2050. “We look forward to furthering such efforts and contributing to the region's renewable energy ambitions,” concluded Wang.
