A high-tech Tokyo-based research institute has introduced the world's first “AI Scientist,” a cutting-edge artificial intelligence program that will enable new scientific discoveries.
AI Scientist is designed to create scientific research all by itself, from idea to report.
Sakana AI, the developer of the new technology, says it can come up with a novel idea, develop a methodology, run tests and write a report for around $15 per paper.
In its latest research paper, Sakana AI says the system can also learn from its own reports, developing and improving ideas across multiple reports.
However, as it is still in its early stages, Sakana AI said the system has limitations and challenges, such as implementing the idea, page layout, and comparing the size of two numbers.
The AI Scientist noted that it had modified its own code and parameters to try to improve the chances of successfully generating the report by giving itself more time rather than doing the work faster.
According to the research paper, although AI Scientist could be used unethically by manipulating or plagiarizing research, it represents an important step towards realizing the full potential of AI in scientific research.
“We believe that AI scientists will be excellent companions to human scientists, but only time will tell to what extent the essence of human creativity and serendipitous moments of innovation can be replicated by the open-ended discovery process of artificial agents,” the company said.
