State Department of Public Safety troopers recently helped rescue an escaped giant water turtle that was trying to cross Interstate 10 near Picacho, but the fate of the turtle remains a mystery.
On July 30, a motorist contacted authorities to report a turtle attempting to cross a busy highway halfway between Casa Grande and Tucson in Pinal County.
The driver and DPS Sergeant Steven Sekreke were able to rescue the turtle from the road unharmed.
Officers found the name “Stitch” written on the turtle's shell and contacted an ostrich farm three miles away.

According to the Arizona Republic, the ranch confirmed that Stitch was one of their captive turtles that had recently escaped from their habitat.
Stitch was later returned safely to the ranch, the paper said.
