Highlights
Steam has added a new tab to its storefront that allows players to browse only popular free games. Unfortunately, the tab is already overloaded with demos, making it hard to use. Current issues aside, the majority of the community is happy with the new update.
Steam has integrated a handy new feature into its storefront that allows users to distinguish between trending new free games and paid games. The community stated that the previous version of the Trending tab was “unusable”, so Steam's new feature was highly anticipated by users.
Whenever Steam updates with a new feature, fans are often overjoyed to check out the game-changing accessibility features. The storefront is over 20 years old and has slowly changed significantly since its inception, with certain features coming and going over the years. While Valve gave fans something new to look forward to in Steam's latest update, eagle-eyed users also recently noticed that the studio appears to be testing a new system for filtering Steam reviews. The feature briefly appeared on the storefront and was then removed, but was noticed before that.
Related: Steam removes useful new feature
Valve has removed a potentially useful new store feature from Steam just hours after some users noticed it working on their PC client.
On August 13, Valve released a Steam update that implemented new tabs on the store's homepage. If you scroll to the bottom of the main storefront, you'll notice a “Trending Free” tab next to the standard tabs. This is intended to separate free-to-play games and demos from paid games that are also new and trending. It's a feature that fans have been asking for for a long time. Steam's latest addition has already been praised, with many saying it's a welcome change to the platform.
Steam launches new trending free tab
Since Valve releases new Steam updates on a regular basis, this handy new feature likely went unnoticed by most of the community, but those who did notice it praised Valve for the change. On Reddit, user Naftak said that this is a very welcome change as the Trending tab was “unusable.” However, not everyone is happy with the change. Some users have pointed out that the new Trending and Free tab seems to be mostly demos and has very few actual free games.
Steam has a ton of great free games, so it's understandable that fans are a little confused by the sheer number of demos in this new tab. However, it's worth noting that there are two “See More” options at the bottom of the tab that users can check out. The first one shows users a bunch of free games, and the second one shows users even more demos.
Steam continues to face tough competition from other popular stores, such as the Epic Games Store, which regularly gives away free games. Therefore, Steam's continued evolution and the addition of new features is always welcomed by fans. However, if the new trending free tab consists of only demos, Valve may need to make some adjustments to make the new features acceptable to all users.
