CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – UNC Hospitals is among the nation's leading hospitals for improving care and outcomes for underserved communities and populations, according to new rankings from U.S. News & World Report.
The magazine included UNC Hospital on its inaugural list of “Best Regional Hospitals for Equitable Access,” making UNC Hospital one of only 53 hospitals nationwide and one of four in North Carolina to receive this recognition.
“We are proud of our teammates and physicians who work every day to provide excellent care to all patients, regardless of their background,” said UNC Hospitals President Janet Hadar. “Our mission is to improve the health and well-being of all North Carolinians, and we take that very seriously.”
The new honor and its corresponding hospitals were announced at a special event in Washington on June 6 called “The State of Equity in America.” U.S. News brought together thought leaders from business, government, health care, education and other sectors for a day of dialogue exploring solutions to eliminate disparities in America.
“U.S. News' recognition of Best Community Hospitals for Equitable Access highlights the important and necessary work hospitals are doing to improve health care in underserved communities,” said Tabia Binger, senior health care data analyst at U.S. News. “This recognition is promising as a positive sign of community hospitals' dedication to equitable access across 26 states. However, it also highlights the need for continued focus on prioritizing care for vulnerable populations who may face many social and economic challenges when receiving care.”
U.S. News' analysis of all of the current Best Community Hospitals in the U.S. identified 53 hospitals in 26 states that are doing great work in disadvantaged communities. While the facilities listed below are not all of the U.S. hospitals that provide access to socioeconomically vulnerable populations, the hospitals below provide access to quality health care to certain vulnerable populations.
