The Northern Kentucky Health Department has confirmed an outbreak of an illness causing gastrointestinal problems for some residents. According to the health department, an outbreak of cryptosporidiosis, also known as “crypto,” is spreading in the region. Officials said there are 12 confirmed cases of crypto in the region. There are also 20 unconfirmed cases, meaning people have symptoms but have not yet been tested or received results. Crypto is a gastrointestinal illness that causes symptoms such as watery diarrhea, abdominal cramps, low-grade fever, vomiting, and nausea. These symptoms can cause dehydration, and young people who are immunosuppressed are at higher risk for more severe illness. The health department said most people who come into contact with the virus develop symptoms within seven days of exposure. Officials said anyone who tests positive for crypto or experiences symptoms should not use swimming pools for at least two weeks after symptoms subside. For more information on crypto, click here.
