WEST ASHLEY, S.C. (WCSC) – A West Ashley church hosted its first ever Health and Wellness Fair Saturday afternoon.
More than 50 area residents attended the Charleston First Assembly of God Church and its Salt Ministry.
Event coordinator Rose Marie Lawyer said she and her team felt a calling to put on the event.
“People are suffering and in need, and a group of tradesmen come and explain things so they know how to take care of themselves, their health and their finances,” Lawyer said.
She said she wanted to provide a space for people in the community to learn more, as some may not have access to health insurance or medical services.
“To make this dream a reality, we all had to come together and work together to get this off the ground and make it a success,” Lawyer said.
About 15 vendors participated, offering free trials, gift bags and other information on physical, mental, spiritual and financial wellness.
One man said he regularly gets health checks but has health concerns and would like to know more.
“So I didn't think it was a crime to come here today and participate in this event,” attendee Lloyd Dawson said.
He said his favorite vendor is MUSC, where he can learn about blood sugar and blood pressure.
“They asked me three things and I got two out of the three right and told them they'd be back in a minute to see if I could complete the third,” Dawson said.
The attorney said he hopes this will be an opportunity for people in the Lowcountry to learn how to improve their health.
“We want to help, any community, any area. We want to be of service to the community. It's like giving a helping hand, we're reaching out to help,” the lawyer said.
She also said she hopes next year's event will be even bigger and more amazing.
