WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — This weekend marks the final game of the Bay Bridge Series, with the Oakland Athletics facing off against the San Francisco Giants, and Sunday being the last time the two teams will meet at the Oakland Coliseum.
The Athletics will head to West Sacramento and Sutter Health Park for the next three years.
Leon Lee, a Sacramento native and former major league player who was a radio host when the RiverCats were the Athletics, is excited about the stadium renovations.
“Major league players are so pampered these days that they need to have enough space in the locker room area where they can eat, take calls and have a media room,” Lee said.
ABC10 also spoke with Trevor May, a former 2023 Athletics pitcher.
“There were very few lockers and I think someone was sitting on a couch. I think some people didn't have lockers so that needs to be improved,” May said.
He also spent five years in the minor leagues, pitching at Sutter Health Park last year while undergoing rehabilitation.
He said both stadiums are pitcher-favorable and hitting against the wind is difficult.
“The Coliseum is a big ballpark for pitchers anyway, so it's the same thing. If anything, it's a little more favorable for hitters than it is at the Coliseum. It's tough. It's hard to hit there, but the two days I played there, nobody hit the warning track,” May said.
May said the Bay fight was both the end of an era and a little humorous.
“I think the Athletics were in that stadium (Sutter Health) for a while, but with the way things are going right now, the major league Athletics are just playing in the Triple-A Giants Stadium. Internet memes are writing themselves on this,” May said.
The Battle of the Bay takes place at the Oakland Coliseum on Sunday at 1:07pm and tickets are sold out.
Some Athletics fans won't be able to watch the final game in Oakland
