ATHENS, Alabama (AP) — Country singer Keith Urban announced just hours before he would be performing a free concert in the parking lot of a convenience store and gas station in north Alabama. Hundreds of people showed up for the Friday night concert in Athens, about 100 miles south of Nashville. The venue was Buc-ee's, a roadside chain known for its barbecue. Urban said he visited the restaurant about a month ago and thought it would be fun to perform there. Video showed Urban drizzling barbecue sauce on brisket behind the store's food counter.
Indiana Jones' iconic felt fedora sells for $630,000 at auction
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The brown felt fedora worn by actor Harrison Ford in the second Indiana Jones movie has sold at auction for $630,000. Movie memorabilia company Prop Store announced the bid on Friday. The hat, which appeared in 1984's “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,” had been expected to sell for between $250,000 and $500,000. It came from the personal collection of the late stuntman Dean Ferrandini. The Herbert Johnson Hat Company in London made the fedora from sable rabbit felt. Keeping the fedora in place during filming was a challenge.

“Stay” lyricist and lead singer Maurice Williams dies at age 86
NEW YORK (AP) — Rhythm-and-blues singer and composer Maurice Williams has died at age 86. Mr. Williams, along with his backing band, the Zodiacs, became one of rock's great one-shot acts with the classic ballad “Stay.” At just over a minute and a half, the song outlasted the Zodiacs' time. The song was covered early on by the Hollies and the Four Seasons, and Jackson Browne's live track was a highlight of his 1977 album, “Running on Empty.” “Stay” also appeared on the soundtrack to the 1987 film “Dirty Dancing,” which sold millions of copies.
Massive earthquake strikes off the coast of Russia's Far East, no damage reported yet
PETROPAVOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, Russia (AP) — A powerful magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck the Pacific Ocean off Russia's Far East near a major naval base, but there have been no reports of damage or injuries yet. The quake early Sunday prompted a tsunami warning that was later lifted. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake occurred 18 miles below the surface and was centered about 63 miles east of Petropavovsk-Kamchatsky. The port city of more than 181,000 is surrounded by volcanoes and lies across the bay from a key Russian submarine base. The National Weather Service's Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu initially warned of the risk of a dangerous tsunami along coastlines within 300 miles of the quake's epicenter, but later said the threat had passed.

ROME (AP) — Madonna celebrated her 66th birthday with a private nighttime tour of the famous Italian ruins of Pompeii, where she announced she would fund an arts project involving young people from the nearby area for a year. The American pop star was shown around by the archaeological park's director on Friday. She also met with a group of teenagers taking part in the “Flying Dreams” project, in which hundreds of young artists re-enact Aristophanes' classic comedy. Authorities say they have arrested an escaped North Carolina inmate serving a life sentence for murder.
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (AP) — An inmate serving a life sentence for murder was arrested at a North Carolina hotel three days after he escaped on his way to a medical appointment, with the assistance of at least one other person, authorities said. The Department of Corrections said Ramone Alston, 30, fled Tuesday from a van that had arrived at the University of North Carolina Digestive Hospital in Hillsboro for a medical appointment. Alston freed himself from his leg restraints and fled into the woods while still handcuffed. Alston was taken into custody about 2 a.m. Friday at a hotel in Kannapolis, about 110 miles southwest of Hillsboro, according to the Department of Corrections.
Father and son Eugene and Dan Levy to co-host the Emmy Awards
NEW YORK (AP) — Eugene Levy and Dan Levy will make history as the first father-son co-hosts at next month's Emmy Awards. The Levy brothers had a huge success at the 2020 Emmy Awards, when winners appeared remotely because of the pandemic, thanks to their hit series “Schitt's Creek.” In addition to being a co-host this year, Eugene Levy was also nominated for his Apple TV+ series “The Reluctant Traveler With Eugene Levy.” The 76th Emmy Awards will air live on ABC in Los Angeles on Sept. 15 and stream the next day on Hulu. The Levy brothers will also be co-hosting for the first time since 2018 with “Saturday Night Live” stars Colin Jost and Michael Che.
