Sunday was elimination day for the 2024 Little League Baseball World Series.
All four scheduled games were win-or-lose matches, two in the U.S. division and two in the international division, all in preparation for the MLB Little League Classic between the New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers at Historic Bowman Field in Williamsport.
While the now-annual MLB game helps connect Little League players with the highest level of the game, there was plenty of pressure on them in their own games first.
Here are the schedule and results for Sunday:
Sunday Schedule and Results
New York beats Illinois 4-0, Mexico beats Canada 8-0
Pennsylvania beats Washington, 12-2
Australia v Aruba: Match suspended
New York beats Illinois 4-0
On Sunday, New York's Vin Ruggiero and Dean Scaragiello led the team to a 4-0 win over Illinois.
Ruggiero pitched five innings and was aided by a stellar defense. He didn't need much scoring support, but New York got plenty with four runs in the fourth inning.
Scalangelo's two-point hit down the other end was the highlight of a comeback that also saw Chase Curro and Alex Torres score.
That wasn't the end for Scalagiello, who pitched another shutout in the sixth inning to keep New York alive in their Little League Baseball World Series hopes.
Mexico defeats Canada 8-0
New York wasn't the only team to post a shutout victory on Sunday.
Mexico kept their championship hopes alive with an 8-0 victory over Canada. Mexico quickly took control, scoring three runs in the first inning, led by a two-RBI single by Luis Longoria.
That was enough for pitcher Raul Hernandez Jr., who also contributed to his own win with an RBI triple in the third inning and did not allow a hit until the third inning before handing the ball over to the bullpen.
Canada never posed a real threat until the end as Mexico emerged victorious.
Pennsylvania beats Washington, 12-2
Pennsylvania started the game off right against Washington and rode that momentum to a commanding 12-2 victory.
The winners scored four runs in the first inning, including a two-RBI single by Grayson Gage, but that was just the beginning, as Pennsylvania benefited from multiple passed balls, several walks and an RBI hit by Tyler Wexler.
Wexler also took the mound in the fourth inning, closing out the game with a 1-2-3 shutout.
The lead was double digits, enough to seal the victory via mercy rule.
Australia vs Aruba match cancelled
The final game of the day was suspended due to inclement weather in the area and is scheduled to resume on Monday.
