EAST PEORIA (25News Now) – The Peoria Area World Affairs Council hosted a luncheon at the Paradise Hotel on Monday with some very distinguished guests.
The event was attended by hundreds of people and was hosted by retired U.S. Army veteran and former CIA director Gen. David Petraeus.
Veterans, students and history buffs gathered to learn about the general's new book, “Conflict: The Evolution of War from 1945 to Ukraine.”
Petraeus spoke about his history in historical conflicts and shared lessons learned about how to prepare for the future.
PAWAC program chairman Don Samford said it's important to host events like this one where the public can learn directly from world affairs leaders like the general.
“The people of central Illinois and central America are just as interested in (world affairs) as the rest of the world,” Samford said. “(This event) gives people a chance to meet someone in person, instead of being far away on TV or radio.”
As program chairman, he hopes the event will inspire people to share their ideas with elected leaders on how to improve the defense posture.
Samford says the best way to find out about PAWAC’s upcoming events is to become a member. For more information, visit pawac.org.
