Amazon Web Services CEO Matt Gurman has reportedly suggested that artificial intelligence could take over much of the coding work.
What happened: Gurman's comments during the June fireside chat weren't intended as a doomsday prediction, but rather as a kind message to software engineers, Business Insider reported, citing an audio recording of the meeting obtained by Business Insider.
“If we look 24 months from now, or even further out — I can't predict exactly when that will be — it's possible that most developers won't be coding,” Gurman said.
The AWS CEO, who took over in June, has envisioned a change in the role of software developers, emphasizing that a developer's skill set goes beyond coding to also include innovation and creating products that are compelling to end users.

Gurman's comments come at a time when there is much talk about AI's potential to transform or even replace jobs.
But he remains hopeful, noting that there are more creative opportunities for developers and that AWS is helping its employees “continue to upskill and learn about new technologies” to be more productive with AI.
“The situation for developers in 2025 may be different to the situation for developers in 2020,” he said.

Why it matters: According to the survey, 37% of companies have already replaced employees with AI technology, and 44% expect AI to result in job cuts in 2024.
This data highlights the growing impact of AI on the job market and the need for employees to adapt to this changing environment.
Previously, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates asked OpenAI CEO Sam Altman a similar question. During an episode of “Unconfuse Me,” Gates asked whether AI and robots will replace blue-collar jobs.
Altman did not directly answer the question, but said that AI “has the potential to transform the job market for a lot of blue-collar jobs quite rapidly.”
Other big tech names, including Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, also predict that AI will change the role of developers.
