WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Vaughn boys faced Henderson, Nevada, in the Little League Baseball World Series on Wednesday with a second chance to qualify for the U.S. Championship Tournament.
As Bohne prepared for his third game on the national stage, Bohne's classmates and teachers gathered at Voss Middle School and Bohne South Middle School for watch parties.
In the cafeteria at Julian Hurst, Doc Mogford, Kayden Guffey, Aiden Munoz and Gage Stuebing's middle school, students cheered and yelled for hits, runs, strikes and everything else.
Borne's Kayden Guffey, who is accustomed to performing on the national stage out of Williamsport, Pa., was given the starting role against Nevada's Wyatt Erickson.
Borne jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, with runs from Hurst and Gray Collins, and cruised smoothly to a place in the U.S. semifinals.
Soon after, Boerne found itself in a pinch with one out and the bases loaded for the first time in the tournament.
But even with the pressures of the world on their shoulders, the Boerne boys remain composed.
When Guffey walked with the bases loaded, manager Justin Newson brought in Caleb Chryst from the bullpen.
Crist got a crucial strikeout for the second out, but Nevada tied the game before Stubing got Bohne out with a fly to center field with the bases loaded.
From that point on, Boerne never looked back. In the bottom of the third, Hurst hit a ball to center field, sending Stubing home.
Boerne retook the lead, 3-2, after the third inning.
Both teams were battling the weather as rain began to fall.
Boerne showed composure in the second half of the game, extending their lead and ultimately winning 5-2.
With this win, Borne qualified for the LLWS US finals.
