SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The University of California, San Diego introduced the use of AI robots in classrooms Thursday morning in an effort to simulate doctor-patient interactions for aspiring medical professionals.
The university is using Macani Robotics' AI-enabled humanoid robot RIA as part of its English Language Laboratory at the School of Continuing Education, a press release stated. International students taking a four-week medical English course were able to get better practice through more realistic doctor-patient role-play exercises.
According to UCSD, Leah is specifically designed to mimic patients and is programmed with multiple characters that offer unique medical scenarios and personality types. During Thursday's session, students took turns talking to the robot while simulating building rapport with a patient.
“The introduction of RIA into the English Language Institute's Medical English course marks the first robotics classroom experience on the UC San Diego campus and demonstrates the school's commitment to providing innovative educational experiences to students,” the press release said.
