BMW has surpassed Tesla in electric vehicle sales in Europe for the first time, but only for one month, according to the data.
Tesla has been Europe's top EV manufacturer for several years, but for the first time, domestic manufacturer BMW sold about 300 more cars than its U.S. rival in its home market.
Data from market research firm JATO Dynamics showed BMW sold a total of 14,869 EVs in Europe last month, overtaking Tesla for the first time.
This is a big win for BMW, proving to itself and its competitors that it can hold its own with the best, but there are some key takeaways to note, including the fact that Tesla still has a big lead over BMW in total EV sales this year.
Tesla still maintains an advantage of more than 6,000 vehicles, giving it 3% of the market share, according to EU EVs, a website that tracks EV sales statistics across the European Union.
According to the website, Tesla has sold 26,980 cars in the EU this year, with BMW coming in second with 20,895, giving Tesla a market share of 13.2% and BMW 10.2%.
Breaking down the models, the Model Y remains the best-selling car in Europe with 17,057 units sold in July. The Model 3 came in second with 9,732 units sold. The BMW i4 came in fourth behind the Audi Q4 e-Tron.
Here are Europe's top 10 manufacturers and EV models (via EU-EVs):
It was a strong month for BMW, with sales up 35% compared to the same period last year, a figure also acknowledged by JATO Dynamics, while Tesla's sales fell 16% compared to July 2023.
