The Brooklyn Center Board of Education has approved a referendum to increase new education revenue for Brooklyn Center Community Schools.
The district's capital projects levy asks voters to spend roughly $700,000 over 10 years to update classroom technology and provide staff training.
For a median priced home in Brooklyn Center costing $300,000, that would mean an extra $14 in monthly taxes. More detailed figures on the tax impact can be found on the district's website.
Last fall, voters rejected a referendum that would have increased the district's operating tax.
Brooklyn Center School District Superintendent Carly Baker said the new technology levy, if approved, could help the district free up money for other expenses.
“By asking voters to consider a capital projects tax this fall rather than an operating tax, we can free up funds to address our technology needs, thereby freeing up operating funds for other district expenses, while keeping the tax impact on district homeowners lower than what was asked for last year,” Baker said.
If approved, the capital projects levy would expire during the 2034-2035 school year.
