The late French film star Alain Delon requested that his dog be buried with him. The dog survives.
PARIS (AP) — The late French film star Alain Delon once said he wanted his beloved Marinette dog, Louba, to be buried with him. To the relief of animal rights advocates across France, Louba will be allowed to live. Delon, an internationally acclaimed and prolific French actor and producer, died Sunday at age 88. His burial will take place Saturday at his family home in Douchy, south of Paris. After his death, animal rights activists and concerned citizens expressed concern about Louba's fate. An official with animal rights group the Brigitte Bardot Foundation said they had spoken to the family and were told the dog would survive.
Kamala Harris and Beyoncé? Yes, but the stars could only be heard through speakers.
Will she be there? Not Beyoncé, Kamala Harris. The vice president introduced herself to the country she hopes to lead at the climax of the Democratic National Convention on Thursday, when people spent the night wondering if the music superstar would make a surprise appearance. After all, Beyoncé's campaign theme song, “Freedom,” was heard only through the loudspeakers. Harris' speech was less than half the length of the one her Republican opponent Donald Trump gave last month when he accepted the GOP nomination. And unlike the other major speakers at this week's Democratic convention, she appeared just before 11 p.m. on the East Coast.
See George Clooney's memorable moments as he prepares for his comeback at the Venice Film Festival
Few Hollywood stars have deeper ties to Venice than George Clooney. Twenty-six years ago, he first attended the festival with the instant classic “Out of Sight.” Nineteen years ago, he debuted his second film, “Good Night, and Good Luck,” here, earning his first Best Director nomination. And ten years ago, he exchanged wedding vows with then-wife Amal Alamuddin at the Aman Venice, the five-star hotel on the Grand Canal. Clooney hasn't made his film debut at the festival in seven years, but the clock will be reset next week when he returns with “Wolves,” reteaming with Brad Pitt.
A seventh body has been found aboard a superyacht that sank off the coast of Sicily, believed to be Mike Lynch's daughter.
ROME (AP) — Italian rescuers have brought ashore the body of the last missing person aboard a superyacht that sank off the coast of Sicily. The woman is believed to be the daughter of British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, who died when his ship sank earlier this week. The coast guard said the woman's body – the seventh victim of the sinking vessel – was found Friday. Mike Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, Hannah Lynch, was the last missing person. The Lynches were aboard the 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged yacht Baysian, which sank in a storm early Monday. Mike Lynch's body was recovered Thursday.
Twins born! Second giant panda baby born in Berlin
BERLIN (AP) — The Berlin Zoo announced that its longtime giant panda Meng Meng has given birth to twins, a second time. The babies were born Thursday and are thriving. They were born just 11 days after an ultrasound revealed that Meng Meng, 11, was pregnant. The zoo said Friday that it had not yet determined their gender “with certainty.” The babies are tiny, weighing 169 and 136 grams (about 6 and 4.8 ounces) and measuring about 14 centimeters (5.5 inches). Like other large bears, giant pandas are born deaf and blind and pink; their black and white panda markings appear later.
A young humpback whale is freed from fishing gear that had tangled its tail in Sydney Harbour.
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — A nearly 24-hour rescue effort in Sydney Harbour has freed a young humpback whale from fishing gear that had its tail tangled. Government wildlife rescuers released the rope late Friday morning and the whale quickly began swimming toward the Pacific Ocean. The distressed whale was first reported at 1 p.m. Thursday by a whale-watching cruise ship operator in the port. Rescue efforts using boats, helicopters and drones began Thursday afternoon and resumed at dawn Friday. Whale experts said the animal was breathing tiredly before it was rescued and could have been entangled long before it was noticed.
Andrew Tate under house arrest amid new human trafficking allegations involving minors
BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — A court in the Romanian capital has sentenced controversial internet influencer Andrew Tate to 30 days of house arrest. Prosecutors are investigating a wide-ranging new case that includes charges of trafficking minors and having sex with minors. The Bucharest court's decision came a day after prosecutors detained six people, including Tate and his brother, Tristan Tate. Undercover police officers searched four homes in Bucharest and nearby Ilfov County. Prosecutors had asked the court to detain the brothers for 30 days. Tristan will be placed under judicial control, which typically includes geographical restrictions and regular reporting to police.
The largest diamond in over a century has been discovered in Botswana – weighing in at a whopping 2,492 carats.
GABORONE, Botswana (AP) — A Botswana mine has unearthed its first large diamond in more than a century. The country's president unveiled the fist-sized rough at a public ceremony Thursday. The Botswana government said the 2,492-carat stone is the second-largest rough ever found at the mine. It is the largest diamond found since 1905 and weighs about 500 grams. Officials say it's too early to determine its value or decide how to sell it. Botswana, a southern African nation of 2.6 million people, is the second-largest producer of natural diamonds after Russia, and all of the world's largest rough stones have been unearthed in recent years. The Karowe mine has produced four diamonds over 1,000 carats in the past decade.
How do you pronounce Kamala? Her nieces explain at the Democratic National Convention
WASHINGTON (AP) — The star-studded final night of the Democratic National Convention included a lesson in how to pronounce Kamala Harris' name. It was performed by none other than the candidate's nieces. Actress Kerry Washington summoned the girls to lead a call-and-response with the crowd. Eight-year-old Amara told half the crowd to say “comma,” while six-year-old Leela told the other half to say “la.” Donald Trump frequently mispronounces Harris' name as “Ka-ma-la,” a move the vice president's supporters see as disrespectful.
Mealworms may have been dropped on a table in a Chicago hotel where delegates to the Democratic National Convention had breakfast.
CHICAGO (AP) — Mealworms may have been the culprit behind guests falling ill while dining at a Chicago hotel during the Democratic National Convention earlier this week, Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said Thursday when asked for an update on Wednesday's incident. Police said multiple suspects entered the Fairmont Chicago, which was hosting a breakfast for Democratic National Convention delegates, and began placing “unidentified objects” on food tables before leaving just before 7 a.m. Wednesday. One person who ingested the food was treated by medical staff and released at the scene, Chicago police said.
