Three people have been charged in connection with a deadly shooting at a Birmingham apartment that was streamed live on Facebook.
Two men, 20-year-old Justin Jamond Hendrix and 22-year-old Taylor McCloud, have been charged with the murder of 21-year-old Asia Alice Poole and the attempted murder of her best friend, who survived the shootout.
Justin Jaymond Hendricks was booked into the Jefferson County Jail on Friday at 4:33 p.m., and McCloud was booked in at 5:07 p.m. Both are being held without bail.
Janiya Hendrix, 19, who was fighting with Poole before the shots rang out, was charged with first-degree motor vehicle theft after allegedly fleeing the chaotic scene in the town of Poole.
She was booked into the county jail at 4:51 p.m. Her bail is set at $30,000.
Janiyah Hendricks and Justin Hendricks are siblings. Both were taken into custody Wednesday night at a family member's home.
Acquaintances of Poole said there was an ongoing dispute between her and Janiya Hendrix over a man.
Things came to a head Tuesday night when the two women got into an argument in a parking lot.
It escalated into a brawl and gunfight at the Monarch Ridge apartment complex on Gallant Drive, formerly known as Valley Brook.
The video showed the pool area involved in a fight that began with Janiya Hendrix and later involved multiple people.
The shooting appears to have started near Poole's car in a parking lot, then moved into a hallway in one of the apartment buildings, where a hail of bullets fell.
The brawl and subsequent shooting was captured on Facebook Live video.
Birmingham police responded to Monarch Ridge around 10 p.m., after the initial call was of gunshots being heard, and officers then received a report that someone had been shot, Sergeant LaQuitta Wade said.
When officers arrived, Poole was found unconscious in a ventilated area of his apartment, and Birmingham firefighters pronounced him dead at the scene at 10:31 pm.
Poole, of Monarch Ridge, leaves behind a daughter who started kindergarten this week. Her 21-year-old father died July 26.
Poole posted a live video of himself from the parking lot just before the match.
Poole's brother and sister could be heard crying in anguish on the video after the shooting.
Poole's friend suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to UAB Hospital, where he was shot in the leg and has since been released.
Wade said investigators learned the fight appeared to be broken up after moving to a ventilated hallway, where shots rang out minutes later.
After the shooting, Janiya Hendrix reportedly fled in Poole's Ford sedan, which was also captured on video. Witnesses said Poole's car was already on the road when he jumped in and fled the scene.
The stolen vehicle was found abandoned in the parking lot of J Wings on Center Point Parkway.
The stolen vehicle was found abandoned a short time later in the parking lot of the J Wings on Center Point Parkway.
Police said 168 shots were fired.
Police appear not to have been able to recover all of the shell casings, and a spent bullet was found Wednesday outside the walkway where Poole was killed.
Residents and witnesses described the shooting as “like something out of a movie” and said it appeared to be a planned attack.
They said there were multiple shooters, some of whom were wearing masks and some of them were armed with assault rifles and Glock-style switch guns.
“This is what they came for,” said one resident, who asked not to be named for fear of retribution. “They were very organized. They sealed everything off, locked everyone up.”
Resident Shannyn Ross said at least three people initially fired shots directly into the hallway where Poole was ultimately killed.
Poole and her friend “fell to the ground,” but her friend picked her up and the two were able to reach a ventilated walkway.
Witnesses said after the first gunshots rang out, someone came out from another hallway and began firing.
Residents then said they heard gunfire from all directions.
Police said once the shooting began, several people not involved in the initial altercation also appeared to begin firing guns.
Police and witnesses said Poole was hit at least twice.
Ross said several nurses checked her for a pulse but there was none.
“She was gone,” Ross said.
“I can't get it out of my head,” she said. “This little girl died because of a fight.”
A hail of bullets hit several cars and apartments.
One resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, showed us bullet holes in his apartment, including one that had shattered a glass table.
The investigation is ongoing.
“We believe there were other shootings beyond these two individuals and we'll wait to see how that plays out,” Thurmond said.
Police are asking anyone with information or additional video about the incident to call detectives at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
