NASHVILLE, Tenn. (August 23, 2024) – Nashville Predators General Manager Barry Trotz announced today that the team has acquired forward David Edstrom, goaltender Magnus Krona and the Vegas Golden Knights’ conditional 2025 NHL Draft first-round pick from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for goaltender Yaroslav Askarov, forward Nolan Burke and Colorado’s 2025 NHL Draft third-round pick.
If San Jose acquires Vegas' first-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft and finishes in the top 10, San Jose has the right to transfer either the first-round pick or Vegas to Nashville.
Edstrom (age 19, February 18, 2005) appeared in 44 games for Frölunda HC of the Swedish Hockey League last season, recording 19 points (seven goals, 12 assists) and leading the team to the semifinals of the league postseason. The 6-foot-3, 185-pound center tied for first in assists (12) among SHL U-20 skaters during the 2023-24 season. He also tied for fourth in points scored and shared the best plus-minus (+12) among players his age or younger in the league. In the playoffs, Edstrom added six points (two goals, four assists) in 14 games as Frölunda lost to Skellefteå in the semifinals in seven games. Edstrom was originally selected by Vegas in the first round (32nd overall) of the 2023 NHL Draft and made his SHL debut in 2022-23, scoring four points (two goals, two assists) in 11 games. A native of Gothenburg, Sweden, from the Frölunda system, Edstrom also played in the country's U-20 and U-18 leagues, contributing at a point-per-game pace with 28 points (15 goals, 13 assists) in 28 games on the junior circuit in 2022-23. Internationally, Edstrom represented Sweden in winning silver medals at the 2024 World Junior Championship and the 2023 U-18 World Championship.
Cronna (age 23, August 28, 2000) played in the NHL, AHL and ECHL for the Sharks organization last season, appearing in a total of 42 games as a rookie. The majority of his playing time was spent with San Jose in the AHL, appearing in 31 games with the Barracuda with 6 wins, 17 losses and 6 draws, a 3.49 goals against average and .894 save percentage. He made his NHL debut with San Jose on November 4, 2023 against Pittsburgh, before appearing in eight more games with the Sharks and earning his first career win on March 9, 2024 against Ottawa. Prior to turning pro, the 6-foot-4, 194-pound goaltender enjoyed a four-year career at the University of Denver, where he earned numerous accolades, including back-to-back NCHC regular season championships and the league's Goaltender of the Year award in the 2022-23 season. Selected by Tampa Bay in the fifth round (152nd overall) of the 2018 NHL Draft, the Skellefteå, Sweden native played his junior hockey in the Nacka and AIK systems before coming to North America.
The Predators currently hold nine picks in the 2025 NHL Draft: three in the first round, two in the second round and one each in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth rounds. This will be the first time in franchise history that Nashville will hold three first-round picks in the same NHL Draft.
