Live Score/Bracket
Hoping to make history, Shane Van Boening faced off against Hanoi Open champion Jason Shaw in the round of 16. The match was closely fought, with both players trading rucks early on as they fought for the lead, but a dry brake from Shaw gave Van Boening the opening he needed, racing through the ruck and onto the hill. A foul from Van Boening gave Shaw a ray of hope, but another dry brake from the Englishman saw the South Dakota Kid wipe the table and take the win, 10-5.
Van Boening then faced off against underdog Vitaly Patsula of Ukraine, who put up a formidable challenge in another closely fought match. A scratch from Patsula at the 12th rack break, followed by a golden break from Van Boening at the 14th rack, gave the American the lead and reached the hill. A fierce one-ball safety battle ensued, with Van Boening initially winning but then stalling at the 8th ball. But at the next rack, Patsula scored a dry break and Van Boening capitalized to win by a narrow margin of 10-7.
Reigning World Champion Fedor Gorst faced off against his Mosconi Cup teammate Skylar Woodward in a rematch of their European Open round of 16 match. Gorst led 5-0 early on, buoyed by a lucky 2-9 win, and eventually took the mound up 9-5. A missed cut on the ninth ball gave Woodward a chance to turn the game around, but a dry break on the 15th rack sealed Woodward's fate and Gorst advanced to the quarterfinals.
In the quarterfinals, Ghost faced Jeffrey Roda, who had knocked out fellow Filipino Johan Chua. Ghost again led 5-0 with some excellent safety play, then a lucky bounce on the nine-ball made it 8-1. Roda reeled off four racks, but a scratch at the break gave Ghost the chance to close out the match and seal his place in the semifinals.
The quarter-finals saw another Mosconi Cup showdown between former European Team stars Joshua Filler and David Alcaide, both of whom faced off after their respective wins over Marc Bichtelbosch and Michael Baoanan in the round of 16. Filler, the 2017 world champion, quickly asserted his dominance, scoring a commanding 10-3 victory over “El Matador” Alcaide to book his place in the semi-finals.
Meanwhile, Ko Ping Yi continued his good form from the previous round, ending Alvin Ou-Shiang's hopes of a first US Open title with a thumping 10-4 victory to reach the quarter-finals, but Ko's momentum was thwarted by 2014 World Champion Niels Feyen. With the match tied at 4-4, Ko's error on the sixth ball proved costly, and “Terminator” Feyen seized the opportunity to run through the rack and defeat the last remaining Ko brothers to book his place in the semi-finals.
The semi-final will be tomorrow between Fedor Gorst and Niels Feyen, kicking off at 10am EDT / 3pm BST.
