ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – As more than 14,000 students return to classrooms to kick off the school year in Albemarle County, the region’s largest jurisdiction, Principal Education Consultant Lee Elberson highlighted the impact of smartphones on education while highlighting key concerns and solutions.
Discussing the challenges teachers face regarding student cell phone use, Elverson said, “Teachers understand that cell phones are interfering with their job success.” He advocated for stricter cell phone regulations, likening schools to courtrooms where cell phones are often confiscated upon entry. “Cell phones are an addiction, and the best thing we can do is keep them out of the classroom.”
Elverson also offered back-to-school tips for parents, emphasizing the importance of limiting screen time, preparing for standardized tests and encouraging intellectual curiosity at home. “It makes sense to set screen time limits so you can prepare for bedtime and screen-free zones,” he advised.
As the new school year begins, these measures are intended to create a more focused and productive educational environment for Albemarle County students.
