JERA Co., Ltd. (hereinafter, “JERA”) has signed a joint research agreement with Lotte Fine Chemical Co., Ltd. (hereinafter, “LFC”) to realize a low-carbon fuel value chain.
Under this agreement, JERA and LFC will jointly accelerate the creation of a robust and resilient low-carbon fuel value chain through the following approaches:
– Standardization of commercial frameworks
– Collaborative research to increase operational flexibility and optimize each company's ammonia portfolio
– Joint efforts to consult with both governments to build and expand low-carbon fuel value chains
To guide this effort, the Government of Japan and the Republic of Korea (“Korea”) have launched the Japan-Korea Cooperation Dialogue on Hydrogen and Its Derivatives, such as Ammonia, a program aimed at strengthening cooperation across several key areas.
Hiroo Inoue, Director-General of the Energy Conservation and Renewable Energy Department of the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy, said, “Japan and South Korea are strengthening cooperation to ensure energy security and build a resilient supply chain for clean hydrogen and its derivatives, and we encourage this agreement between JERA and LFC and look forward to further progress in these efforts.”
“Korea and Japan have similar industrial and energy consumption structures, so various collaborations are underway to lead the clean hydrogen market,” said Chang-ki Park, director-general of the Hydrogen Economy Policy Bureau at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. “Cooperation between the two countries in the private sector is important to expand the global clean hydrogen supply chain and revitalize the hydrogen economy, and this agreement will mark a milestone in realizing this cooperation.”
Ryosuke Tsugaru, Chief Low Carbon Fuels Officer at JERA, said, “We are pleased to establish a collaboration with LFC, a leading company in Korea's chemical industry. JERA aims to accelerate decarbonization efforts not only in the power sector but also in other sectors, including hard-to-reduce industries, and be at the forefront of Asia's energy transition.”
LFC CEO Kim Young-seok said, “JERA is playing a leading role in building a clean energy supply chain in Japan, and we believe this collaboration with JERA is very meaningful. Based on more than half a century of experience and Asia's largest ammonia distribution infrastructure, Lotte Fine Chemical has built a competitive clean ammonia supply chain and has been actively investing. Through this agreement with JERA, we will take a new step in contributing to strengthening Korea's national competitiveness.”
JERA will continue to lead the strengthening and diversification of low-carbon fuel value chains at the local, domestic and international levels, and contribute to global decarbonization and solving energy issues, particularly in Asia.
